Your jawbone's strength is important to your total oral health. With a weakened jawbone from physical trauma or missing teeth, you may need to receive bone grafting so your jaw can properly fit both dental implants and your natural teeth. Bone grafting helps to reinforce and build up your jawbone so it's stable enough to hold an implant. At LifeTime Smiles of OC, osseous surgery is performed to strengthen your jawbone before implant surgery to replace missing or weak teeth. Make an appointment with highly trained dentist Dr. Kareem Abraham at his office in Santa Ana, CA to get more information on surgical bone grafts.
"Dr. Abraham and his staff are great! Not only have they seen me, but our three kids (ages 8,8 & 9, yes twins) and our grandma. We've all seen dentists that are highly recommended, from Corona Del Mar to San Jose as we use to live in Silicon Valley, but I can honestly say that Sr.Abraham and his staff (from dental hygienists, front office staff to the Doc himself) are the best I've seen. They are obviously a for profit business, but they go out of their way to make sure you get more value than what you would ever expect. Dr.Kareem is above all, concerned with the overall health of our entire family. He does things like screen his patients for different issues, as a precaution and doesn't charge extra, just to make sure he has a good overall picture of your health and that you're well informed. I think the biggest thing though is everyone in our family likes going to the dentist because it's always a good experience. The doc is wonderful with our kids and they really like him. They've never complained of anything and that's great! I just recently found out that Dr.Kareem was listed as OC's top 10 doctors in Orange Coast magazine and he didn't pay them a dime, it was a total surprise to him."- S.B. / Yelp / Mar 20, 2019
"The best dentist in Orange County. I have been visiting this office for years now. The staff are courteous and professional, they know who you are and are happy to see you. They provide excellent care and attention with the newest equipment and techniques. MOST IMPORTANTLY you will not feel a thing when they are working on your teeth. They are incredibly gentle while they work. I recently had a filling and the procedure was over before I even knew it. When I say that I didn’t feel a thing I mean that I did not feel even the slightest pinch, pressure, or discomfort. I was incredibly impressed and can not speak well enough about this office."- A.S. / Google / Jun 24, 2020
"We are so thankful we met Dr.Abraham! Our first appointment was our family of four.Luckily they had kids center filled with legos( mind you before this whole COVID craziness happened) where they were able to enjoy legos and watch a movie while my husband and I got our cleaning. I couldn’t believe how sweet and loving all the girls were! I can’t remember all the names but Ms.Anna entertained the girls while Chelsea literally heated up an organic cheese pizza for my girls to eat while we finished! Not only was customer service on point but the actual dental work that needed to be done was finished professionally! Luckily my husband just needed cleaning. But I had some work done including a root canal where I was taken to Dr.Bijan for my root canal In which he did a n awesome job! Didn’t feel a thing with the gentle wave tech! So thank Dr.Abraham for sending me to Dr.Bijan and back to get my perfectly shaped crown that was assisted with Mariah. Did I mention you can get the rhinestones here that have been going In style! Ask Mariah for details! Again, don’t waste your time looking around just check it out! Sorry for novel!"- J.R. / Yelp / Jun 22, 2020
"I have a friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in a while and was absolutely amazed at how great his teeth looked. I asked him who his dentist was and I switched immediately to LifeTime Smiles. I am so glad I did. What a great office atmosphere ontop of Dr. Abraham being a great dentist. I believe he takes great care in the wellbeing of my husband and I and our dental needs. I would HIGHLY recommend LifeTime Smiles of OC."- L.B. / Yelp / Jun 10, 2020
"During the COVID-19 pandemic I had a capped tooth that was previously chipped years ago. The cap on the tooth came off leaving me with half a front tooth and no dentist being open to fix it. Luckily through a family member I was able to find Dr. Abraham and see him in less than 24 hours after I chipped my tooth!! Dr. Abraham went above and beyond to see me and fix my tooth, he even apologized for not being able to see me the same day it happened. His office is also extremely helpful and friendly. Anna at the front desk was very welcoming and accommodating. Also, his assistant Mariah was extremely friendly, personable, and helpful. I now will be going Dr. Abraham for all my dental work and will be referring all my family and friends to him."- A.C. / Google / Jun 10, 2020
A weakened jawbone may be caused by some oral diseases, like gingivitis, or if you had a physical trauma to your mouth. The jawbone may begin to atrophy if you were missing a tooth (or teeth), and it wasn't treated/was replaced with a removable or cemented restoration instead of a dental implant. A bone graft builds up the jaw and prepares you for a dental implant; however, you'll have to be willing to commit time to the process. Bone grafting may require several months to heal, but you'll get a stronger, healthier jawbone that will support your dental implant and your natural teeth to give you a healthier mouth.
What To Expect
The exact process of bone grafting surgery will depend on the graft source and the amount of grafting being done. Your bone graft may be taken from your own body from areas like your chin, hip, or lower leg, which is called an autograft. An autograft may be performed in our office using sedation and local anesthesia, or at a surgical facility using general anesthesia. Additional graft methods include an allograft, which harvests bone from another human. A xenograft is a bone graft from an animal, usually a cow. A synthetic bone graft may also be used, known as an alloplast. At your consultative appointment, Dr. Abraham will go over your options for bone grafts and help you select the best method.
Once your graft is ready, Dr. Abraham will prepare the areas being treated and place an incision through the gum tissue to reveal the bone. Your bone graft will be affixed to your jawbone with proteins and collagen that stimulate growth in the graft. The incision will be closed with sutures and the mouth will be cleaned.
In the following six or more months, the graft should heal into your jaw, a process known as osseointegration. Within this timeframe, it is critical to follow a proper oral care routine with flossing and brushing, plus any additional products suggested by Dr. Abraham. He may write a prescription for pain medication or antibiotics for any inflammation or discomfort after your graft. You may need to make follow-up appointments at LifeTime Smiles of OC for progress checks and to decide when you are ready for the dental implant process.
Our office can talk to your insurance company to understand your benefits and personal costs, although if it's medically necessary, part of your costs for the surgery are typically paid. At your consultative appointment with Dr. Abraham, he may be able to estimate your costs with or without dental insurance and explain payments we accept, including low-interest medical financing.
