DENTAL BONDING AND CONTOURING

Accidents happen. You may take a bad step, trip, and chip your tooth. It is also possible that a tooth can become discolored from an illness or medication. Highly skilled dentist Dr. Kareem Abraham performs bonding and contouring to fix dental imperfections at his office in Santa Ana, CA. A fast but effective treatment, bonding and contouring uses composite resin (also used for tooth-colored fillings) to hide stains and discoloration, fill gaps between teeth, fix cracks or chips in a tooth, lengthen a tooth, and even improve the shape/size of a tooth. For an effective treatment to enhance your smile, schedule an appointment to get more information about bonding and contouring at LifeTime Smiles of OC.

Overview

BEST CANDIDATES

Dental bonding and contouring may help with correcting cracks, chips, gaps, discoloration, tooth length, and other flaws. As a more affordable cosmetic procedure, bonding and contouring can usually be done in one quick visit to our facility. It does not need prep work like with crowns or veneers, but it is not as strong and typically does not stay on as long. Dental bonding and contouring is ideal for minor flaws, but if you want larger improvements, a different restorative or cosmetic treatment may be better suited for your specific needs. During your consultation, Dr. Abraham will listen to your needs and wants and then discuss your appropriate treatment options.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Bonding and contouring will typically be done in a single appointment at our facility in Santa Ana, CA. You shouldn’t need anesthesia; however, options for sedation may be reviewed with Dr. Abraham at your consultation for concerns like fear, anxiety, and/or a strong gag reflex. As soon as you’re ready, Dr. Abraham will apply the bonding material using a bonding agent to the desired areas aided by one of his assistants. The composite resin will be set with more layers added, as needed. After the layers of composite resin are set, Dr. Abraham will shape and smooth the composite resin and your natural enamel for a beautiful result. He will also check your bite and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your comfort.

RECOVERY

Once you’ve had bonding and contouring, it is important to not consume staining drinks and food (such as tea, coffee, and tobacco) for two days. The bonding material can stain and chip so you should not bite hard objects like ice, hard candy, pens, and your fingernails. Additionally, you should clean your teeth immediately after eating. Teeth that have been bonded and contoured need to be cared for like natural teeth with daily flossing, brushing, and mouthwash. Dental cleanings at LifeTime Smiles of OC can help to polish away stains from the bonding material. With good care, bonding and contouring may last as long as ten years. At your dental examination, Dr. Abraham can help you determine if your dental bonding and contouring procedure should be done again to refresh your smile.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Bonding and contouring is an aesthetic treatment so it is typically not paid for by insurance. Our office can talk to your dental insurance company to double check if it is covered; however, you will probably need to pay for the cost of the treatment on your own. At your consultation with Dr. Abraham, he will discuss your estimated costs and the payment methods we take at LifeTime Smiles of OC.
